Strong authentication in the cyber world is generally associated with dedicated devices, in order to fill at least one of the three parameters that define it:

• something you are - some biometrics associated to you like finger print, iris scan or DNA maping
  
• something you know - a password or an identity depended detail you and you alone know
• something you have - a physical or virtual object you own

Many strong authentication solutions offer key-like devices in the shape of smart cards, USB tokens etc, and combined with a PIN (Personal Information Number) which acts as a password offer solution to the last two parameters mentioned earlier.

But is it really necessary to carry around these devices at all times in order to have our identity available with us?

I think not.
There are ample devices around us in the modern world that could fill this exact roll, by smart manipulation of the authentication process.

Ask yourself what are you likely to take with you when you go out of home on your daily routines: your wallet, your car keys, your house keys, your cell phone, task list of any kind, digital smart card or some kind of electronic token etc.

Most people would firstly have their cellular phone with them, followed by car keys, wallet and their task list.
Of course you could always attach your e-token to your car keys or add the smart card to your already bursting wallet, but you already have devices with you, so why the hell do you need some more?

when you reach your destination there are some more devices  associated to you (we call them channels) such as your work phone number, your email, your twitter and other IM (Instant Messaging) and more.
